Podcasting in Hollywood: Leadership in the Industry

Hollywood and traditional media are now producing podcasts. Hollywood celebrities announce “Podcast Projects” like feature films and every studio and TV Network has announced a Podcast division. Private Equity firms are flooding the market with cash. Podcast are now ShowBiz.

Conal Byrne is the President of the iHeartPodcast Network for iHeartMedia.  iHeartRadio carries more than 250,000 podcasts from its own to other major podcast publishers and Conal oversees the iHeartPodcast Network of more than 750 original shows that amass more than 127 million downloads a month, making it the No. 1 commercial podcast publisher globally. He also oversees a

team of over 50 podcast producers throughout Atlanta, New York and Los Angeles. He led the launch of the HowStuffWorks (HSW) podcast program 10 years ago as CEO, making it the central focus of the company. Byrne joined iHeartMedia when the company acquired HSW in October 2018. He also previously served as Senior Vice President of Digital Media for Discovery Communications, where he ran digital for all of Discovery’s U.S. networks and led the launch of Discovery VR. Byrne graduated from Georgetown University Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English. He also went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from Columbia University in New York City where he received a Master’s in Literature. In his free time, Byrne also writes and records music, supports up-and-coming indie film directors and tries to keep up with his four young kids.

 

Caroline Edwards is newly the Director of the Podcast Initiatives at ICM Partners; providing the talent and literary agency with focus in this rapidly growing space. In this role Edwards works in conjunction with agent teams to help shepherd ICM clients into engaging podcast formats as she oversees shows from their creative inception through the sale and launch. Prior to this Edwards supported the agency as Creative Director for ICM Politics, utilizing her background as an acting member of Hillary Clinton’s Presidential campaign.

 

Norm Pattiz is Founder and Executive Chairman of PodcastOne, the founder of radio-giant Westwood One, and a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame. Additionally, he has been featured in numerous major profile pieces in Forbes, Fortune, USA Today, Adweek and more, recognizing his leadership and innovation in podcasting since PodcastOne’s founding in 2012. With over 40 years of experience in audio, under his leadership, Westwood One became America's largest provider of news, sports, entertainment, talk and traffic programming to the Broadcast Industry. Westwood One owned, managed or distributed NBC radio networks, CBS News, CNN radio, the Mutual Broadcasting System, NFL Football, NCAA Basketball, March Madness, The Super Bowl, both the Winter and Summer Olympic Games and a wide variety of syndicated music and talk shows. In 2010, Pattiz founded and launched Courtside Entertainment Group to produce and distribute quality programming. Recognizing the untapped opportunities in the audio on-demand industry, Pattiz then launched PodcastOne at the end of 2012. The company quickly became the leading producer, distributer and revenue driver in audio on-demand programming. Today, PodcastOne’s marquee line-up of personalities and brands include Adam Carolla, Shaquille O’Neal, Steve Austin, Dan Patrick, Kaitlyn Bristowe, Tip “T.I.” Harris, Jim Harbaugh, Dr. Drew, Ladygang, Kim Zolciak, Jon Taffer, Terry and Heather Dubrow, Jordan Harbinger and many more. In 2000, Pattiz was appointed by President Clinton, and reappointed in 2002 by President Bush, to serve on the Broadcasting Board of Governors of the United States of America. The Board oversees all U.S. nonmilitary broadcasting services, including The Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, Radio Liberty, Middle East Broadcasting and others. Pattiz lives in Beverly Hills with his wife of more than 30 years, Dr. Mary Turner Pattiz.

 

Sarah Penna, Co-Founder Frolic Media: A successful entrepreneur and digital media executive, Sarah Penna is the co-founder of Frolic Media, a media brand for the massive Romance audience. Prior to that, she was the Head of Awestruck, a millennial-moms focused network and lifestyle brand launched in 2015 at AwesomenessTV. In this role, she was responsible for creating and launching the division, identifying talent to sign to the multi-channel network and collaborate on programming for various platforms (YouTube, FB, and Go90). During her time there, the MCN reached over 60 million views/month with a combination of celebrity and digital-native talent. Prior to that, Sarah was the Co-Founder of Big Frame, the first digital-only talent management firm. During her time there, she helped to establish Big Frame as an industry-leading media company and talent management firm with 300 talent signed, who have a combined 70+ million YouTube subscribers and have a total social media reach of 200+ million followers. Dubbed “CAA for the digital set,” Big Frame was acquired by Dreamworks in April 2014. Sarah sits on the board of the non-profit Groceryships that focuses on food insecurity in South LA. Bryan Moffett is Chief Operating Officer of National Public Media (NPM), a subsidiary of NPR owned in partnership with PBS and WGBH. Moffett spearheads NPM's strategic planning focused on securing corporate support for the future of NPR, PBS, and the public media system; manages acquisitions and partnerships; and provides ongoing thought leadership in the development of new sponsorship offerings. Moffett joined NPM in 2008 and has served public media for more than a decade. Before being named COO in November 2016, Moffett served as the General Manager of NPM. Under his direction as GM, NPM achieved more than 50% growth in NPR corporate sponsorship, with eight-fold growth in the NPR podcast business alone (2014-2016). He rebuilt NPM's regional sales model with Member stations and established an award-winning NPM digital products team producing some of the highest-performing digital ads among premium publishers. His team's integration of sponsorship into the new NPR Player was recognized with the 2016 Digiday Award for "Best Brand Platform." Moffett joined NPR in 2005 as a Digital Media Marketing Analyst, focused on building traffic and audience to NPR.org through new partnerships with organizations such as Google, Yahoo, and Slate. In 2006, he led the creation of digital sponsorship at NPR and has worked in concert with NPR's digital media teams to build sponsorship models for the launch of NPR's iPhone apps, the NPR iPad app and NPR podcasting. Moffett's work and advocacy has helped establish a sustainable business model for the podcasting medium at large. As a member of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) Podcast Working Group and other industry efforts, Moffett has advocated for informed, standardized podcast measurement to help prepare the industry for dramatic growth. For his contributions to advancing the digital ad operations industry and ongoing leadership in the field, Admonsters honored Moffett with a Digital Media Leadership Award in 2017. Prior to joining NPR / NPM, Moffett spent his early career managing editorial publications and digital/IT infrastructure. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in News-Editorial from West Virginia University.

 

Tyler Moody is vice president and general manager of WarnerMedia Podcast Network, a division of Turner Content Distribution (TCD), the domestic distribution arm of Warner Media. In this capacity, Moody oversees podcasting for WarnerMedia’s portfolio of brands, leading the publishing and production for all company branded podcasts and assisting with developing and launching new branded podcasts. Moody is responsible for the news, sports and entertainment podcast content as well as providing the brands with content development support, operational management, production assistance, podcast distribution and coordinates with sales to develop a promotional and marketing strategy. Moody is based in Atlanta and reports to Jennifer Mirgorod, executive vice president of content distribution and strategic partnerships for Turner Content Distribution. Previously, Moody served as vice president at CNN Newsource Sales where he managed the digital audio business for CNN including handling the licensing of CNN Newsource & CNN Wire content to terrestrial radio affiliates. Prior to CNN Newsource Sales, Moody was vice president of CNN Radio where he led the editorial team in terrestrial radio news service and converted the business to all digital audio. Moody is a member of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) Audio Group. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in communications from University of Illinois at Chicago. Chris Peterson, President, Kindred Media, LionTree LLC: Chris Peterson is a digital media executive, with a focus on audio. Peterson has a unique background with demonstrated success in broadcast radio, streaming and podcasting. Currently, he is the President of Kindred Media at LionTree Advisors, serving as the lead on Kindred Media products, such as KindredCast, as well as advising on audio & digital strategy for clients. Previously, he was Executive Vice President of Podcasting at iHeartMedia, commercial radio’s first podcast executive, where he developed and launched the iHeartPodcast Network, which grew to be the largest commercial podcast network in the world. He also led the acquisition of Stuff Media, which saw the 2nd largest commercial podcast network, HowStuffWorks, become a part of the iHeartPodcast Network, cementing iHeartMedia as a leader in podcasting. Peterson has also launched successful online radio streams for networks, as well as launching nationally syndicated radio hosts like Elvis Duran and Bobby Bones nationally. Peterson resides in Westport, CT with his wife and two daughters.
