REBEL (Documentary)

In 1861, at the outbreak of the American Civil War, a teenager from New Orleans headed to the front lines. Under the alias Harry T. Buford, he fought at First Bull Run, was wounded at Shiloh, and served as a Confederate spy. By 1863, Buford was working for the Union. But Buford harbored a secret – he was really Loreta Velazquez, a Cuban immigrant from New Orleans.

Q&A with Maria Agui Carter (Writer/Director/Producer)

MARIA AGUI CARTER’s most recent documentary REBEL aired as a National PBS special, won a 2014 Erik Barnouw Honorable Mention Award as best historical film in America, and is touring the US.  Her new play 14 Freight Trains, about an undocumented Latino who became the first American soldier to die in Iraq, premiered at Arena Stage to critical acclaim Fall 2014.  She grew up an undocumented "Dreamer," graduated from Harvard, is a NALIP Trustee and a member of WGAE.  She has won Warren, Rockefeller, George Peabody Gardner fellowships, among others, and served as a visiting artist/scholar at Harvard, Tulane and Brandeis universities.  Her new dramatic script, The Secret Life of La Mariposa is a Sundance screenwriter’s Lab finalist.
